i had a lovely little Christmas this year & really enjoyed the preparations of seeing in a new Season!

i tried to spend time soul-cleaning & found some new, wonderful people in the process.

God blessed me with truly special time with people i love. i am so thankful for every moment.

these are a few I captured...

i love my JOY cup. it's stayed full of hot cocoa, tea & coffee all winter.

when I'm chilly, it reminds me what truly warms me inside & out.

when I arrived home, Mom had everything sparkly & beautiful.

I love their little tree with our family ornaments on it. She unwrapped some really old

ones, which brought a flood of Christmas memories to my mind...

....one being the year she spent making these glorious ornaments for our tree.

Mom & Dad bought this nativity set when my brother was a little guy (30+ years ago).

They still put the set out every year...and hide the Baby Jesus until Christmas Eve.

I've learned so much about giving from my parents, who both serve the Catholic church & people of our home parish. This year, Mom made lots of baked goods, like empanadas. After Mass, she & Dad took them to a shut-in couple in the mountains, along with Christmas Communion.

I wanted to attempt something special for people that would be from my heart.

I knitted scarves for several of my friends & family. I loved it! It brought good time to watch Christmas movies & time to think about Who we were preparing for.

This was a very special, warm Christmas full of fantastic people, fun & renewal.

Thank you Lord for coming to give us a chance to bring You to the whole world.

I slipped into the church & took this through a window as Betsy prayed before their Mass.

molly introduced me to jen & robert at her engagement to j party. I hadn't seen them in a while, then jen showed up to work teen chrysalis with me! i was overjoyed! she & robert are fantastical youth ministers & pretty dang fun to hang out with in the afternoon!

They're pretty hilarious! We weren't sure how the shoot would go, because clouds decided to take over our sunset & it got really dark, really fast! LOL Thanks for sharing your Friday. I hope you have a happy weekend!

st. ann's teen a.c.t.s asked me to design some tees & i was inspired!

i love youth tees. they're just good fun!

it turns out the kids just needed a creative boost & designed their own tee

after seeing samples! i feel blessed to have been asked for designs

& can't wait to begin my new volunteer ministry with them in the fall.

my friend, gary, asked me to help him out with a logo for his independent photography business. because he's a genius artist, he already knew what he wanted for his new logo.

we churned this baby out in about an hour! the kids are from a photo he took at a Rockhounds Baseball game.

Lovely Sarah - First Photo Shoot

SUNDAY: After a wonderful lunch with her awesome family, Sarah volunteered to be the first portrait shoot with my new Nikon. I was a little nervous about the digi-cam, but being Sarah the teacher, she quickly put me at ease with her contageous laughter, silliness & endless patience. So we figured things out together (quite literally) & it all worked out great! Great friends are my diamond necklaces & their love my mansions. Enjoy!

New Stuff in my Life!

I had a really great weekend! I worked a little & played a little, so I'll be posting two blogs today. I know, weird - especially for me.

I made my first clothing project. Sleeper shorts! I'm not sure who is going to get these for Christmas, but I'm right proud of them. WOO HOO! Mom helped me about 100% with these babies. First she whipped out a homemade pattern on her kitchen table the last day of Thanksgiving vacation, then answered many maaaaany silly questions after I was back in Texas!

Audrie came up with the idea our Bible study needs to make kids' Christmas shoe boxes to be donated! So she presented us with the challenge of filling a shoe box with items for a 14 year old girl. That got my brain workin' overtime. What do teens LIKE these days? Helloooooo all 14 year old girls are into make-up!

Being a former make-up artist & still loving the daily play in color, I figured every girl needs a roll n carry make-up case. It doesn't take too much room in the ol' messenger bag AND it's cute!

My sewing machine got a full length workout & my trusty seam ripper was ready!

I only had to pull out 1 or 2...

I found the perfect starter kit for a young girl who may not have the advantages we do in the U.S. It warmed my heart to be able to do something personal at Christmas!

I LOVE CHRISTMAS!

Home Makin' Stuff

The past few weeks have been very confusing for me. At first I was this: "whatever! It's gonna all be cool." Then the next week I was, "LAY ME OFF?! You'll see, New York, you'll need me!!" Then it was on to, "Oh my heavens, I really don't have a job." All the way to, "Okay! So let's start a business & make staying at home work for ME!!!" All stages have had plenty of laughing, crying, freakin' out & general peace. God knows what He's doing....so I may as well let Him do it without resisting. Instead, I'm going with the flow & seeing what's what.
"So what's she been really doing?" you ask.

WOO HOO!!!!

I'VE BEEN MAKIN' STUFF!!!

Sooooo many fabrics...what to do...what to do....?

So many rows & rows of clothes, pillows, purses & curtains waiting to be made! Wait....CURTAINS!!!

I need curtains in the kitchen where the back window has a little see-thru spot!

VOILA!!! Oh yes....I can make 1940's colors work with awesome paisley.

Note the wine bottles... OH YEAH!

I rocked some painting on glass.

I've found it takes something called "patience...?"

I dunno. 2 hours later, 1 was sorta finished.

Next on the Project Home: get Molly's art ON THE WALLS.

For the first time in a year....I'm happy with my kitchen!

Now they're up in my office! LOVE EM!

So, as you can see, being unemployed hasn't made me crazy, it's just makes me...sorta jobless.

I've been so blessed to begin taking contracts, but they aren't pouring in like crazy. It's good. I'm being given time to get things put together for a workable office. Re-cabling a home & finding ways to connect an ethernet across the house is ToTALLy NOT MY THING.

I thank God for making me an art girl. We have more fun!

Warm Holidays, Warm Cheeks

Soooooooooooooooooooo...... I've kinda been outta the loop due to the unfortunate passing of my dearly departed full-time employment. I'll miss ya ol' buddy. We were the best of friends & you made my life interesting. Welp, now that that's over n done, what have I been thinking about? Surely I am looking for a job... Well, it seems one found me! Wild Curl PhotoGraphics is about to be official. Yes, you read correctly. I am going at it on my own in graphic arts w. a little photography thrown in.

More on that in future posts. For now...it's a bit drizzly outside & very gray, so I want to talk about warm things like Holidays, cozy slippers, apple smelling things, combined with glowing candles and how about some mulled wine? I hadn't tasted this SCRUMDILLYUMPTEOUS treat until last year at a Swanson Christmas party. It is somethin' for sure and def something I want to share!

Thanks to the lovely folks at saveoncrafts (tempting site...sooooo tempting), I'm able to share a very simple, VERY yummy recipe with you, my Tribe. I hope you'll try it. Most of the alcohol simmers out for those Holiday parties (but still, don't take any chances) & you can use any red wine you really love! Here it is:

Ted's Mulled Wine
Pour two bottles of red wine into a saucepan. Slice two oranges and add to the saucepan, along with eight cloves, one cinnamon stick and 4 T. of brown sugar. Simmer at least 10 minutes making sure you do not boil the mixture. Sprinkle with nutmeg before serving.

And there you have it.

Serve warm w/ ginger snap cookies or some other crunchy fave for dipping! Yes, hard to believe, but it really is a treat for the Holiday blues upon realizing you have to wrap all those discounts you scored!

Summer Art!

This summer I've had the opportunity to do some different kinds of art, which I've really LOVED! In my graphic arts life/career, I've been given the rockin' job of helping kick off a new city entertainment guide: The Pulse. I was given the awesome job of designing its new logo:

Theeeen my friend Kelly asked me if I'd be willing to help out his FREAKY AWESOME band,

Blacklight Confession. So I designed 'em a poster or two, then went to a couple of shows! They are a crazy fantastic cover band! Come check 'em out this weekend at Hot Shots in d.t. Midland.

God's really been speaking to my heart about trying new things. So Mols lent me some brushes & gouache, then gave me a set of aqua-oils to play with (she's such an encourager of my heart).
So I prayed about what to paint. God told me of a new friend in need...who I've witnessed changing over the summer. So I painted "Freedom in Trust" to give to her. I was so happy what happened when I simply let go & let God show me the way...

*laffin* I had to post this next one 'cause I finally saved up the money to buy my own set of gouache. I went all out & bought a 24 color set which includes glittery silver & gold. I never knew watercolor could be glittery! So exciting for a girl like me! So this lame rendition of my logo was to try out all the colors and, of course, the glittery silver. Ha!

This is my most recent painting. Two Sundays ago, the God-inspired Patrick Payton asked the question of Stonegate Fellowship: "How willing are you to really be consumed by God's fire & meet the person you're supposed to be?" I want that so much! In fact, it's been a constant prayer all summer long & since beginning the TrueFaced Bible study with my wicked-awesome girl group! So I felt very called to paint just how consumed I want to be by Him....

Mols & I had a photo shoot last month...but you'll have to check that out on her blog in the new section "Coffee with Kate." In the meantime, check out her blog Specs & Wings. She's the most beautiful heart I've ever seen & inspires me every single day. I am proud to call her my little sister.

So! I've really loved this summer of art stuff! I have more to post & hopefully will have it more organized by week's end. I've really missed you all & hope to have internet at home soon!

Watermelon Margaritas by Domino Mag Online!
(before they shut down--breaks the heart!)

WATERMELON MARGARITAS
3 cups seedless-watermelon chunks

(about 1 lb. peeled watermelon)

1 1/2 cups fresh lime juice

1/2 cup sugar

1 cup tequila

1/2 cup Grand Marnier

Combine watermelon chunks, lime juice and sugar in a blender, and blend on high until completely liquid and frothy. Combine in a pitcher with tequila and Grand Marnier. Fill pitcher with ice, stir and serve.

(My girl pal, Auds, & I prefer them blended up rather than on the rox! Also a shortcut is to buy the premixed margaritas & just dump that in with watermelon, GM & ice, then blend awayyyyy for a summer cool-down!)

They and their ancestors have been rebelling against Me to this very day. They are stubborn and hard-hearted people. But I am sending you to say to them, 'This is what the Sovereign Lord says!' "

How many of you have ever witnessed, first-hand, a miracle? Have you witnessed a baby being born? Have you been in the middle of a breathtaking lightning storm or seen a flower open unexpectedly? I would love to share what occurred in my kitchen on a lazy Sunday morning.

I was in the midst of having some quiet time with a journal, cup of coffee & open Bible. Of course, being Kate, I was distracted by something completely unrelated to the Word of God. In typical A.D.D. fashion, I found myself washing dishes & peering out the window at the gorgeous summer trees & green, green grass. As I scrubbed silverware (the worst part of dish-washing, in my opinion), I noticed 2-3 bouncy bubbles floating around my face. My mind wandered a bit & I found myself thinking, "Science didn't INVENT bubbles...it's merely discovered them. That's not quite as powerful, now, is it?" So I closed my eyes to thank God for inventing something as wonderfully happy & fun as BUBBLES!

When I opened my eyes, I defiantly squeezed the soap bottle, sending 5 or 6 fat bubbles into the air. Those glorious good girls of weightlessness danced in the steam rising from my sink! I started laughing to myself. They were so cute! So I closed my eyes again, waiting for one to softly hit my face. Nothing. I held my breath, to keep from disturbing the current path of another.... Again, nothing.

As I opened my eyes I saw something truly amazing & humbling. Hundreds of tiny bubbles floated down from my ceiling. They stirred all around me & began to fill my kitchen! As I slowly turned to make sure I wasn't on some soapy high, they lifted again & swirled to greet more friends. How it happened, I can't explain...but more bubble drifted ever quietly from some unknown place in my ceiling. Tears spilled over my eyelashes as I could feel the presence of the Holy Spirit in my kitchen. I heard a voice in my heart, "Now go tell the world what you've seen..." I was stunned. I didn't want the moment to end. God was in my kitchen.

This miraculous bubble-dance lasted a full 5 minutes. They swept up, danced around, met more friends & celebrated a simple, awesome moment with me. To Him, I am thankful for such an inspiring Sunday blessing to keep forever in a journal & my heart.

Vacation...in El Paso?

You better believe it! I had a really great weekend with really wonderful friends. I was taken to amazing places & saw more than I imagined in 2.5 days. What was intended as a visit to a close friend & his family, became a small adventure of greatness & joy. It was definitely a treasured weekend. When I left, I felt more at peace & more relaxed than I have in a long time. I was so thankful for the warm reception, the many hugs & kisses & the endless laughter with people I love.

I was introduced to Jaxson's for salad & plenty of weekend planning. I loved the atmosphere!

Then it was onto the cinema to see "Sunshine Cleaning," which I really liked!

We walked out the door & hit EStarbucks ("eh-starbucks") for a sit outside in the sunshine. I had a view of the mountains & began gluing items into the travel journal. The camera was out in very little time & my eyes began to slowly open to the possibilites El Paso has to offer.

After an ounce or two of sun-soakin', cafe-n-conversation, I was taken to a Familyland of gourmet food, outstanding dessert, a few beers & beautiful, joyful people & lots of stories --complete with singing to the moon... I loved that.

Saturday, I awoke to the smell of coffee & the warmth of sunlight streaming through the windows. After a quick shower I was introduced to The Bagel Shop! My tastebuds were pretty excited by the warm, fresh bluberry bagel smeared with vanilla creme cheese. WOO HOO! The restaurant was decorated with none other than black & white photos of customers enjoying their time on cranberry colored walls.

From there was an alum-tour & stop at the UTEP Fine Arts Center. We were intro'd to the

2009 UTEP Student Exhibition!

Later, a quick road trip to Las Cruces, NM landed us in Old Mesilla Park (photo by RC).

We walked down a short street to the historic Fountain Theater where we saw an independent French film called "The Class." What an awesome treat! The people were so nice & had fresh baked cakes, plenty of popcorn & drinks at their old-time concession/cafe.

After the movie we headed across the street to the Vintage Wines shop & cafe.

There we sipped a little of a really rich red & an outstanding reisling. Truth be told, I had my heart on finding a bottle from my favorite vineyard. As we looked through hand-painted wine bottles (by a NMSU student named Rebecca), I casually asked if they carried Wines of the San Juan. The owner exclaimed, "Yes! And we're almost out!" I was given a really cool gift to remember the occassion--a bottle of "Girls are Meaner" by San Juan Winery & a hand-painted bottle for my new apartment.

Joy of joys Sunday! After much searching I was taken to a World Market & found the baskets for my new office! I was holding out for the perfect items & found exactly what I'd been hoping for. What a gift & blessing to be able to unpack even more AND organize my art supplies.

Fabulous moment #300 for the weekend: awesome homemade Mexican breakfast followed by my official introduction to Mexican fútbol! That was totally entertaining!! Ricardo & his hilarious father yelled, exclaiming "AIE," more than once. The highlight of this moment was when I heard the ONE word I waited to hear from a real Mexican futbol game...."GOL!!!!" There was much celebrating, high-fives & I do believe an Indios de Juárez cap was thrown down as Armando began dancing a little. *LOL*

I visited a bit, gave a couple of hair tips, talked decorating & attempted to make "Gap Baby" beautiful nieces laugh. I had a really wonderful, memorable time. I will absolutely be visiting more & am very happy to say my former perceptions of this city were altered drastically. To my surprise, I really love it! It just might make the "Could Live There" list that seems to be growing by the year.

I am thankful for such a wonderful weekend & look forward to many more like it!

Yes, Yes....Long Time...

Okay, so when the guys at work are complaining I haven't updated my blog, I know it's time to get off my pride & get to it. So what have I been up to since December??? WOW!!! SO MUCH is changing: my graphics, my need to have a new digi-camera in hand, my hair color, my waistline, my attitude, my pride & so on. It's all been so good!

I am finding I LOVE CHANGE. It might hurt a little, but so does paying bills every month. Seriously, we all have to go through it--so why resist? Life is all about change. It's gonna happen whether you're chained to a desk or flitting from country to country in Europe. As the scholars say, "It's inevitable."

So, what & how have I changed since December? Ohhhh the lists....the painful, painful lists. So, I'll begin where I can remember & when I get to where I can't...I'll stop. Wow.

COUNSELING

Thank God in the Highest it's through St. Stephen's Pastoral Center. Woowwww.....wow, wow, wow. OWW! Yes, counseling is as hard as everyone says it is. BUT!!!! It's also as rewarding as we've all heard as well. Miz Laurel is just about the best on the block. She's tough, sweet as pie & diligent. She never let's me "forget" where we left off last week...even when I'm really trying to.

TAKING MOOD ALTERING MEDS

I was TOTALLY against this right from the get-go. None of the silliness for Miss Kate. I'm a tough Woman of God. With Him alone I can do anything! Put me on the mountain & give me a gold medal. Then the depression of a major move settled in. Ahhhh...the bitter pill of Truth. Depression. Even the word is sad looking. It's stupid. It makes me angry (I learned how to say what things really are from counseling---see how I learn?!). I am un-motivated & I can't accomplish simple tasks like washing the dishes without bursting into tears at how suddenly DIFFICULT it is!!! So, after much prayer, I relented. I only want to "feel normal" again. After one week of the wonder-drug, I had done all my laundry, washed every dish in the house, unpacked the entire kitchen, given away 6 boxes of unecessary items, gone to the grocery store, watched an entire season of The Gilmore Girls, joined the Y, read every day in my Bible & purchased 4 more books to finish by month's end. OHHHHH THE WONDERS OF MODERN MEDICINE.

JOINING the YMCA

What the...? More "owwwww's" only this kind goes away, THEN COMES BACK. I really love it. I have the two best workout partners God could have given. They're encouraging, they make me laugh & are tough as nails. Auds, despite her vicious hatred of mornings, creeps out of bed at 5:30 a.m., 3 days a week, to hit the bikes & occassionally the weights (or her beloved rower). Then, as if that weren't enough, she has given in to her loathing of dance & joined me in Zumba Thursday nights before Bible Study! Then there's Kathleen. The former ballerina turned awesome writer gets me (& Audrie) up every Saturday for some sort of mind-boggling cardio. My favorite is Body Combat, where I get to pretend I'm kickin' some tough guy's tail. My least favorite have been the 5K "runs" where I walk & Kathleen kicks butt by running the entire trail. YAH. She & Audrie have this sick fascination with long distance running. On the street. When it's 32-degrees outside. And we haven't had breakfast OR COFFEE yet.

FACE RECONSTRUCTION

I have decided to let God be God & figure out a way to get my skin in order. So far, He's introduced me to something called a laser, which in itself is mysterious, & microderm abrasion. My first of 6 laser treatments began with numbing gel. I thought this was a great idea, because I like everything to be painless & easy. Sure! Spa me away into dreamland!

It was fabulous until....I licked my my drying lips. Oh yes...I had this big day of "going to the derma-spa," then rewarding my new-found courage by a trip to Chic-fil-a (which I've knocked down to once a month). YES! I was so excited...until...I realize, "I can't feel the inside of my mouth. I CAN'T FEEL MY TONGUE!!! What if I can't taste my chicken & the two crucial pickles?!!" Oh the horror... So I did what anyone would do. I went anyway. I can taste next month.

TOTAL TRUST IN GOD

This has been the biggest hill to conquer. In fact, I'm still working on it...every single day. I've had a few ups n downs, but He is ever diligent in His love for me. I've forgotten it a few times & have had to crawl back to Him on hands & knees, begging forgiveness. Every time I hear Him say, "...what was it you did? I can't seem to remember." It's then I feel His Light filling my darkest places to remind me He's always there & always forgives my past. It's difficult to completely toss everything to "the Wind" & say "here, You handle this. I don't know what to do with it." It also takes much practice of letting control.....go..... This is where work comes in. Let go.... let it all.....go..... Drop the pride. Let go.

He will fill in the rest of the story. I'm living proof....He ALWAYS fills in the rest, even when the money's all gone, there's no food in the house & I'm not sure I'll have enough gas to even get 6 blocks to work. He always fills in my needs & has never let me down. So I'm here to tell you. This is just the beginning. Every day "is just the beginning." I like it that way!

Surprises are always around some corner! You may have to work for it...but it's totally worth it.

Loving life is my reward. I'm TOTALLY glad I chose to continue living, when I had the option to quit.

Have you ever asked God to show you who you are...and He does? Lately I've been struggling with "my purpose." I'm 32, a graphic artist & I feel I'm not doing what He MADE me to do. So I asked... Then the email started coming in, "Would you be free to take some pictures for me?" "Hey, can I get you to do our family photos again this year?" "Hi...I would love for you to take my bridal portraits...pleeeease..."

Now this made me a little nervous, because I put my camera down a couple of months ago when I was getting ready for the Big Move. In a moment of despair, I cried out to My Father "I'm sorry for shoving your gift to the side. SHOW ME, because I might be blind & deaf, what you want me to do with it!" So my phone rang. My good friend Mel was calling to say, "Okay, I have a precious newborn & we want you to take the pictures." So I did.... with a little fear in my heart...but total faith my Papa God would show me the way. And here are a few of the results.

I've been having an issue with my stuff not "looking like" the Ulmers' or Lyndsay Hyatt-Almeida's (Pink Coffee) photoart. I would love my photos to appear soft & commercial. So what am I missing??? (I ask myself) As you can tell, it's very heavy on my heart....then a friend hit me with a dose of reality. "Kate, maybe your stuff isn't supposed to look like someone else's. You have a style all your own....so accept it, use it & soar above your own expectations." (Letty you're so wise...)

So.....I'm going to give that a shot! Imagine....my own style....

Welp, I've been asked to update my blog, soooooo I'm updating my blog. I was tagged by a fellow W. Texan, so I'm following suite on what seems to be the current trend. Woo Hoo!

Six things you may not know about me....

#1. I sang opera in high school & college.

#2. Dallas Cowboys' Cheerleader was my chosen profession until I was old enough to know I really just wanted to be Madonna (gag).

#3. I learned to process & print my own film at the ripe age of 13 when I broke my foot playing volleyball in P.E. Mr. Cadell, my science teacher, appointed me to yearbook staff & taught me how to run a darkroom en solo.

#4. I still like to watch cartoons when I have the Mondays.

#5. Graphic design was self taught in the year 2000....accidentally. *LOL*

#6. I was told by the Johnson O'Connor Research Foundation I would be an FBI Profiler, NOT an opera singer....because I am tone deaf.

Election Night 2008. I'm sitting in the MRT, observing the action from the graphics dept. Lots of prep work has been going down today, as Jimmy, Stew, Craig & Josh (with several others) have been gearing up for live action from the inside. Jimmy will be interviewing several special guests throughout the evening, with Newsroom Stew blogging away as the action unfolds.

This is all very exciting for a girl who hasn't had much exposure to the election overall. As most of you know, I don't have cable & don't really watch television. Any information I receive is from the newspaper or internet. I've been able to form my opinions from personal research & reading. I like it this way.

I'm soaking in the excitement crackling in the air as votes are being reported. Jimmy's ease on camera goes to show the versatility of our awesome newspaper. I am so thankful for the wonderful opportunity to work with some amazing talent & some insanely crazy folk.

Stay tuned to My West Texas Chatter for total coverage! There are fantastic guests & a few surprises. MRT Publisher Dave Wedel is keeping sentinel as the Presidentials unfold. We're all anticipating the end. This is it, folks....the day we've all been waiting to end.

Fiddlesticks Farms!

Good days with friends harbor in the soul of memories. I am blessed to have spent the afternoon with two amazing friends & a squirt of a girl with a 10+ personality! We headed out east on Hwy 158 to Fiddlesticks Farms to take part in none other than their outstanding "cornfield maize." ha ha. The farm provides family fun with generous supplies of funnel cake, corn & pumpkin cannons & a hay ride around the farm.

We were greeted at the entrance of the maze by a baby rattle snake. At that point I tried to turn to leave. I was cheered forward into the depths of the 1,000+ cornstalks grown in the shape of an armadillo & rider (see photo lower down). Kathleen was pumped about getting to the Super Slide, while Audrie & I whined about 3/4 of the way through the maze about funnel cake. Maribel lead us through the maze with great confidence as we attempted to avoid dead ends--ohhh, there were MANY. With the aid of a "Corn Cop," Kathleen soldiered us onto victory! Maribel proudly clanged the black finish-line bell to announced our survial! After the maze, there were funnel cake intros (Kathleen's 1st fried-treat experience) , goat observations, a little rain & lots of pictures.

Moments of Pure Joy...in the Past 7 Days.

Do you ever have moments of pure joy where God shows you how big & very real He is?

Last Saturday, I enjoyed the St. Ann's Fair w/ a friend & his son. God showed me every possible combination of joy, love & peace in a few short hours. Believe me when I say I took in every sight, sound & smell possible. I was completely engrossed in a world full of whistles, music, children's voices, books, cotton candy, bright colors, & laughter.

A few days later, I spent a most wonderful evening with my precious friend Molly. As always, our time was filled with talk of God's change in our lives & His amazing goodness as He forms us in this world. As an über-bonus, we talked of art, creation & our use of it to glorify His profound wonders.

My Week of Joy went a little like this:

- Wed. night, Molly introduced me to a new sister--

The Passionate, Vibrant Amazing Carra!

- The next night, The P.V.A. Carra & I shared a lesson over Acts 4 at 18-24 CBS along with Bonnie the Fabulous, Kim the Amazing & Angie the Inspiring.

- Friday, I was humbled to be able to make lunch for my darling Cymbre. Parts of my heart cry she & Mike (Big Jerkface Bob) are leaving to begin a new life in South Texas, but I am thrilled to have yet another place to visit! They bring me joy every day! Their dedication to Our Papa God has been so inspiring & healing for me!

- Saturday, I spent an exhilarating breakfast w/ Carra talking of

GOD'S ENORMITY & UNENDING LOVE!

...which lead to lunch....which broke at 2 o'clock only by a previously scheduled event.

I am humbled by undeserved moments of joy...

God heard another of my silly little prayers & answered! I stood 25 feet from Barlow Girl & sang my heart out with them!!! I was given very surprise tickets to their Million Voices tour. Kathleen & I went to dance, jump, (cry) & PRAISE GOD. We had the GREATEST time! I can't tell you how much their music connects to my life. I love their energy, passion & pure hearts for God. They are such kewl women of God! I love their message & their ministry passions. They are profound examples for young women today.

I was so moved by their stories &, of course, their phenominal music. What gifts!!! By far, one of the best nights of my life. They were exactly as I imagined in my heart & their ministry voices surpass anything I had ever dreamed. I was enraptured by the presence of the Holy Spirit & woke up with a HUGE SMILE on my face this morning!

I thank God for awesome surprises!

Welp I'm all moved in! A lot of folks have been asking to see photos, so I took a few for the fun of it. They aren't great, because I'm not settled just yet (note the boxes everywhere). I came down with a very nasty virus/cold thingie mid-move. It was a whopper! In bed w/ fever for 5 days!!! How can I have a New Home Party that way? tsk, tsk, tsk.

Come on in... I'll walk you through to see it the the way I do every day! First off, we have a security hall before you come in the apt. Turn the corner & voila!, you have my front door & living room.

Turn about 180 degrees & you'll see my wreck of an office/studio! Trust me, it'll be gorgeous when I'm finished with it.

Look to the left & you're able to peer down my cozy lil' hallway!

A couple of steps down the way are my

bedroom & bath.

Through le office you'll be standing smack in the middle of Kitchen de Retro! Imagine, if you will, the future of bright red & mint green living in harmony & basking in the glorious aroma of pumpkin bread & spiced cider!

Last but never least is my patio. I love it. It's probably my favorite place of the whole nest.

I've already seen families taking advantage of the grassy space & kids peddling tricycles as fast as their chubby little legs would pump.

My chairs fit perfectly & I have plenty of space for visiting friends.

I'm including some pix of the parks around my neighborhood. The park sans fountain is the one I prefer for walking. There are lots of families who walk & play there. I love sharing their unabated joy on a Saturday afternoon!

Moving Day

I have really amazing friends. Moving days have begun. It's been really humbling to witness how great is the Hand of God by the people of my life. I have been blessed in countless ways & I am so thankful for every act of kindness & love. To say this move has been emotional & stressful is a gross understatement! I've been a wreck complete with chocoholic binges & LOTS of coffee. I've been staying up to all hours trying to get that "one last box" filled & sealed. I've gone totally mental & am out of my element! I don't even know who I am right now! If not for the wonderful people in my life sending unforgettable emails, taking me out for coffee breaks & praying for me non-stop, I'm sure I would be a total mess right now. Although I'm still a little weirded out by my new neighborhood, I can already feel the winds of change blowing through my new windows.

In the past few weeks, my priorities have gotten completely insane. Last Friday I began a running commentary that sounded something like this, "I know, I need to go tan. Tanning can be good. It's the only time today I won't have to think about paying a bill--wait, I did pay that electric bill right? I must have, I have a blue dot on my hand accidentally made when marking a box, because I was juggling a Sharpie, the cell phone, the electric bill, my debit card & packing tape----NOOOOOO, no thinking about packing. Tanning. That's the goal. Go for the gold. Drive to the place, walk in the door & forget this madness for 20 wonderful minutes of white noise." HA! Did I win the mental battle? pfffffttt....yeah RIGHT! That beast named Moving knocked on the door of my tanning room with a bucket full of pride & said "you can't escape me. I'll get you my pretty & your little plants, too. Now, go home & grab some cardboard, wench!"

So I did what I had to do. I drove home, promptly popped in a DVD of the Gilmore Girls, made a huge bowl of popcorn & praised my true friend, Procrastination, for his companionship. It was around 11:30 I spied just 3 little things needing to be wrapped in bubbles & taped up. 3 hours later the entire living room had birthed boxes of belongings. Uhhhh....night owl...? Not so much.... Java-filled, turkey sandwich chowing obsessive-compulsive? Apparently...

Call me what you will, think of me how you will...what it comes down to, I'm excited for a new start. I have no idea what it's going to be & for the first time ever I am SO pumped about the mystery of it all!! To add to it all, an even larger mystery has developed as my latest brain wave: I don't know about you....but I'm ready for football season to get in full swing. Ahhh yes, I can feel it....West Texas has finally soaked into my blood. I'm excited about football?! I am officially West Texan, now.

Tell me, oh fine frenzy of dust-deviled angels, what are your hopes for the winds of change this Fall? If anything could happen to/for you in the next few months (before the bitterness of Winter), what would it be?

Beautiful Mess

I'm moving. I know I've mentioned it (a few hundred times)...but this is so bitter-sweet for me. I 've loved my life in this place. I have so many memories here. I lived here for 8 years & grew up in this apartment. I found God here & I gave my heart to Him in this living room. My dear friends met here & married. My love for photography was rekindled here. I nursed tears of love, joy, happiness, sadness & heartache downstairs while nursing sick tummies, shared secrets & sprained ankles upstairs. I fixed wedding hair, halloween make-up & date outfits in the enormous bathroom. I've created glorious art & hosted miraculous parties filled with laughter & food in this place. I've stress-baked thousands of cookies, muffins, cakes, loaves & cupcakes. I discovered my secret recipe for & made about 100 lbs of Christmas candy here. Good memories each & every one. Even the tears have a place here. I found myself in this two-story, light-filled joy factory!

This morning at Stonegate (www.stonegatefellowship.com) Patrick talked of a beautiful mess. He went on to a sermon that was awesome, but totally off the subject of today's blog. The "beautiful mess" jumped into my journal. I love the idea. My packing has become a beautiful mess of color, disorganization & cry for help. This move has been tough on my emotions, but my dreams of the new home are so full & rich, I can't help but wonder, "what God is going to do with me there?" I am absolutely beside myself in anticipation of putting the new studio/dining room together! I can't wait to see it organized & open, yet allowing me to create & dream out loud every day! No more hiding supplies in a totally cramped (& uuuugly) closet!! Oh heavenly joy & satisfaction! I can already hear my beautiful mess calling to me begging to stay out & enjoy the sunlight streaming through the huge window at my back!

One great thing about packing up your life & transferring it to a new location is finding stuff you had forgotten you loved so dearly! Today I found: old love letters (& some beautifully written poems) from a high school sweetheart, a SARK book I've been searching high & low for, my tee shirts & sweatshirts from Texas Tech & a set of candy molds handed down from my Mama-San! Celebration ensued over each uncovered treasure! I turned up a mix of techno, 90s "happy music," Kutless & Need to Breathe to get through the day. At one point, I allowed a 20 minute power-nap, which spurred the randomness of baking of cookies (while packing) & biscuits (more packing). Why do I feel the need for my home to smell like my Granny's house all the time??? I'm going to need to buy stock in flour, if I keep this craziness up. Thank goodness I have an office full of eager samplers to pass my stress-baked goods to! I'm also thankful for the support of the Spanish Kissing-Fish Queen & her band of fake eyelash-wearing, glossy lipped divas. Otherwise I might have decided not to make choco-chips for Molly's Day of Glories!

How do you deal with stress? (I've been munching every kind of bad food I can dig up--I feel like a total mental case right about now). What wacko-crazy habits have you created to be able to deal....with....whatever?

An Irreplaceable Role

This week I discovered a secret... I am not in control. I know, I know. Not an amazing discovery. Those of us who have felt God's presence in our lives know we're not in control. Last night I heard the loud voice of Reason tell me just how in control I'm not....and I rejoiced. I REJOICED! No, I'm not insane. My friends tried to tell me of a man they want me to meet & I cut them off before they could finish (because of a few minor details I didn't want to hear). I told them what I want & what I expect. For some reason, as the night wore on, that seemed very rude of me. I came home & began to write in one of my 12 journals. (Yes you read correctly. I have TWELVE.) As I furiously scribbled down the details of my amazing day, I heard God. "Kate, when are you going to stop telling Me how to write the story of your life? Perhaps I have something completely amazing & spellbinding waiting for you...but you're so caught up in your 'perfectly planned details' you just might miss out." That stopped me dead in thought. I mean I stopped writing, I sat in my chair & stared intently at the blank wall. How could He say those things to me? Didn't He put those "perfectly detailed" desires in my heart? Well...yes...but His plans are on a bigger scale than what I can see on the tip of my nose.

All of this lead me to think of my sister who lives in Oklahoma. She's had an incredible year complete with moving out of her house of 10 years, her best friend of 20 years getting married, a move to Florida, working on a boardwalk, riding a bike every single day to & from work, moving back to Oklahoma, emergency surgery, living with our aunt, beginning a new career, moving to a new city & finding a new apartment. How did she get through each day without losing her mind? Total faith in God. She inspires me! I look at her strength, diligence & perseverence and I think, "...now THAT is how I want to live--OUT LOUD & fearless!" My sister has never been married. She's never had children. She's 12 years older than me. But oh how she's LIVED !!! She has travled the world. She's met interesting & fabulously creative people. She's learned & cultivated new interests & hobbies. My sister steps out of her comfort zone on a regular basis to try new things, even when she's not sure how it's going to turn out. She makes sure she schedules fun & travel as often as she can. She enjoys her people & loves fiercely. She's loyal, passionate & knows who she is. She's raised herself from the age of 16 & never lets hard times sink her ship. God created her perfectly for His plan.

After my praise for an awesome example of a strong woman of God, I made a big decision. No more original Kate details or plans! Trust is the order of life. I am going to try my very best & with my whole heart to trust my Father God with everything, every day. He found me a dream apartment. He's leading me to art I never imagined I could make or sell. He's rekindled my love for singing & photography. He is bringing me back to friends I've missed so much. He allowed me to speak a class about our irreplaceable roles in this world. All this since Monday. Can you, my dear ones, imagine what He's going to do by Sunday?! I am on pins & needles to find out.

Ya Don't Know What You Got...

My laptop adaptor died. Can you believe that?! Right in the middle of packing, re-organizing my life & attempting to hold tight to a thread of sanity, my laptop takes a nose-dive. BAH (grumble). I've been trying to post every day, but this little hiccup put me behind schedule. SO! I'll post tonight, then possibly again later tonight. HA!

I have some new photos I want to share. We've had a couple of rainy days & I've loved every possible minute of it! I love the drips & drops outside my windows. My little garden was a crystalline wonderland with tiny beads of reflection holding on to green leaves for their dear little lives. It was GLOR-i-OUS. I adored the pools of water forming in my "flowerbed." I even played in the rain a little when packing became tedious. I walked in it, opened my windows to welcome the clean scent & praised God for nourishing our parched soil. Everything felt so clean after a few good days of rain. Flowers now look brighter, the sky appears a deeper shade of blue & my heart feels renewed.

One would think the August sun would heat our town up quickly. Nope! In fact, the balmy, cool weather has lead to something of a conundrum for West Texans. The wonderful weather is rejuvenating a generation of overgrown kids who are dreaming of playing outside or dozing in hammocks, instead of being chained to phones or offices. For example, today I was blessed by a beautiful, tasty luncheon in an out-of-the-way cafe.This glorious hidey hole is located inside a lush greenhouse. It was fabulous! We were surrounded by ponds, trees/greenery of every sort, waterfalls & twinkling wind chimes. I wanted to stay all day to enjoy the weather, the smell of green & listen to the variety of ways water splashed about. But alas...my desk called to me... My friends & I took the long way back to the office with the sunroof open & windows rolled down. We laughed & talked continuously of the glorious gift of this unexpected weather. It truly feels like Fall with another school year in bloom...and with it transitions...

As I look at these photos again I wonder, "why is the idea of leaving my little garden becoming so difficult?" Change is good. I'm rather excited to move into a new place & make it my own. I'm attempting to embrace the fresh & the whole "cleaning out" thing. I have about 10 days to pack up my entire life to move to a smaller place. OUCH. Will the light still be golden like it is here? Will I find new little cubbies to explore on the oposite side of town? Will I still hide in my favorite cafe on Saturday afternoons now that it isn't 5 minutes from my door? I have so many questions...and I'm
even a little scared. I guess that's a good sign. It means the change is going to be BIG. Perhaps I'll discover a new secret about myself...where I really can make genius of small space! "BRING IT ON," I say! Let the change consume me. I'm ready for the spice of life to seep into my world.

I have recently become very interested in understanding communication & it's cause/effect relationships. Why? Perhaps it stems from growing up in the Mexican-American culture where most feelings are worn on sleeves & everything is about passion. This includes passionate expression when you don't communicate according to a given person's personal rules. Ahhhh...latin love... It's fierce stuff! If you're not careful, feelings are flying around like those weird key-flies from Harry Potter's first movie! I digress (often). I am becoming a student of good communication. One route I've explored is through a book called "Personality Plus" by Florence Littauer. It groups people, more or less, by personality then breaks down the groups to sub-groups to be able to get a grip on an individual's personality. It's awesome, when you remember to apply what you've learned!

Another set of methods I've practiced (& love) is letter-writing, card-sending & emailing. The benefit of these is saying what you want without having immediate response (most of the time). You get some time to say what's on your mind & organize it a little bit (then write & re-write it a 1000 times so it's perfect). The problem with this method is words, unless very carefully selected, could possibly send the wrong message! OUCH! People's feelings sometimes get hurt or information is recieved not as intended. On the other hand, sometimes you just need to say 3 little words to deliver your entire message.

A third communication loop-hole I've used is via I.M (instant messenger for you old folks). When you're far away from people, this is awesome because you're "talking" real time & more gets said in a shorter amount of time, rather than hashing out email of email & waaaaaiting. The bonus of I.M. multi-tasking! Woo Hoo! I can order new sheets online, balance my checking account AND work on a new logo all while chit-chatting it up with a friend. AWESOME NO?! Not really... sometimes you get distracted when you realize you forgot to write down a $65 debit card transaction at HEB & you're overdrawn! WHAAA?! I.M: "sorry...emergency...gotta run!" (....to the bank to cover that debit by your savings account).

Call me old-fashioned, but I prefer good ol' talkin' (unless there's tension involved--then I'd rather hide under a blanket). I love hearing the sound of my friends' voices when they tell me good news. I love for them to hear my reaction, especially when sharing their joy! I love doing housework, gabbing with my best friends & hearing about their lives in return. It's so.....personal. I rather enjoy my people. I love they want to share their glories with me. I love they want to share their hearts & hopes with me! I love crying for joy the first time I hear a new baby crying in the background or speaking God's gentle words of comfort in tough times.

Mostly I think I love communicating with my Papa God. I love telling Him all about my day. I love sharing what's on my heart & rejoicing in Him with my wonderful praises. I know He already knows...but there's just something so fulfilling about being able to share my whole world with Him. I love being able to pour my mind out knowing He's right there, completely fixed on my every word. Then grace begins to flow... and I have my confirmation He's heard every word & has caught every tear in His mighty hand.

My Father God is my most trusted Advisor, Counselor & Friend. I love communicating with him through song, glorifying Him with my art & honoring Him with my most successful photos! He is my inspiration & my heart... He honors me by living in my heart & tenderly showing me new ways to transform my life. My joy & my peace are derived from His very Will for me. If that means telling him everything....you can bet I'll be first in line to blab, as often as I can.

Captivating

"Captivated" I am. I am totally captivated with what this book is doing in my life & how God is speaking to me through this study. I have read this book 3 times & this has been the best by far. I am doing a summer study with my CBS (Community Bible Study) group & have loved each lesson more than the one before. We, as a group, have bonded in such amazing ways. I love our time together to share & grow to understand one another. I have learned so much about who I am & who God is forming me to be. I'm also discovering the places I need work & healing. Girls, if you've never read this book or done the written study (Mardel), I say, "do it." You won't regret a single moment. God has shocked me more than once & I'm so ready to hear more before the study is finished.

No worries guys, I'd never dream of leaving you out! Stacy's husband, John Eldredge wrote "Wild at Heart, Discovering the Secrets to a Man's Soul." I've read it as well. IT IS AWESOME!!! I now understand men in a way I've never been enlightened before. I've taken a small poll of my male friends & they all agree, John Eldredge finally "got it right." Men love this book as much as women love Captivating. Come to think of it, I'ved love it so much I consider it my handbook to men's thinking. I try to read it once a year as a refresher course to male reasoning. I've heard there's even a "Field Guide" to accompany the book, for men's study.

All in all this time of bonding & study has been so much more than I anticipated. Of course God had it planned from the beginning. I love watching Him unfold the mysteries of our lives. He sure sticks His thumb in the eye from time to time, but it's always for our own good. Yes, even when the pain may feel unbearable. The healing & peace on the other side is completely worth the strain of working our spiritual muscles to their limit. God be praised & glorified for 2nd, 3rd & 65th chances! Ii pray He blesses each of you this week & joy overtakes all bounds! Love to each of you, wherever you are & "...to all a good night."

Busy, Busy, Busy

I will later regret this, but the storm has me wide awake. I can't believe this is finally up & running. I have been dreaming of TWC for months & it's finally up N running. Life is all about change, isn't it? It's glorious! My sweet friend Molly has been ecouraging me to get posting...so I prayed, packed, prayed some more, procrastinated & here we are! I am so excited to see what God has in store for this blog & my time creating, sharing & hearing from you.

This year has been an amazing array of blessings with plenty of new friends, lots of coffee/tea time & learning a new kind of hobby. Lots of change has occurred, but it's all been good. How could it not, when God is driving? He has revealed so many things about my life, my future & the world around me. It's fabulous! I can't wait to share all the wonders, as I discover them. I have plenty of stories to fill in the space when I'm not actively creating new stuff! Right now...it's move, move, move. However...to appease my friends... I was blessed with a suprising inspiration.

In the midst of packing, opening strange drawers, finding treasures & sealing boxes, I was blessed with the gift of a wonderfully AWESOME suggestion, "...why don't you make a memory box?" So I did! Sundays aren't for work! They're for celebrating God's love & His personal, fulfilling grace. Let me share with you how I plan to keep my sweetest memories preserved.

This came as a surprise to me, because, dear friends, I've been feeling...less than inspired, recently. In fact, I've been a little frustrated. Imagine my suprise when God called me to create something totally unexpected to help me get organized as I'm moving! What a treat for Miss Kate!

I AM SO HAPPY TO BE BACK...and CELEBRATING life with you!!!
